TEN IMPORTANT CHANNELS OF VITAL ENERGY

There are seventy two thousand nerves, according Yogic tradition. Among these 10 nerves are considered to be very important ones. They are described below.
1)     Sushumna (spinal cord):- This nerve starts from lower part of spinal column and reaches the brain. It is described that 72,000 nerves are starting from 'sushumna' and these nerves pass through holes in the spinal column which are compared to the holes in the musical instrument 'flute' (Brahma Vidyopanishad).
2)     Ida (Moon nerve) :- This nerve starts from lower part of spinal column and reaches left nostril after passing through spinal cord and left hemisphere of the brain. Some part of the radiations in the left hemisphere of brain is distributed to the heart in the same side. There fore the left side of the brain is always comparatively cool, enabling it to carry out functions such as calculation, language, practical wisdom etc.
3)     Fingala (sun nerve) :- It starts from lower part of spinal column and reaches right nostril passing spinal cord and right hemisphere of brain.  This nerve is described as traveling in hot form. As described above right part of brain have concentration of comparatively high quantity of radiations. This state facilitates functions such as emotions, visions, abstract thinking, artistic creations etc.
4)       Gandhary:-This is the nerve from left eye to the brain.
5)       Hasthijihva:- Nerve from right eye to the brain.
6)       Pusha:- Nerve from right ear to the brain.
7)       Yasasvini:- nerve from left ear to the brain.

8)     Alambusha:- Nerve from tongue and nerve to the mouth.
I 9)  Kuhu:- Nerves going to Genital.
1 10) Sanghini:-Nerves going to Anus.
Yogic classification of nerves
According to yogic neurology total nervous system is classified into five sections.
  • The nerves controlling all functions in the body were classified as 'Thanthra Nadi Vyuham' (Motor Nervous System, stimulating bodily functions)
  • Nerves controlling muscles were called 'Sanchalaka Nadi Vyuham' (Nervous system that create movements) Nerves coming from sensory organs to the brain were classified as Samvedana Nadis (nervous system facilitating perception)
  • Nerves carrying messages from C.N.S to the body were called 'Apagamis' (Nervous system going out)
  • Nerve bringing messages to central nervous system were classified ‘Against’ (Nerves reaching to the spinal code and brain from sensory organs)
