Ancient Indian Sciences such as Ayurveda and Thantravidya considered living body as a machine (Yanthra) run (thanthra) by Vata or Pranas (moving and movement-creating energies). Ultimate source of these energies was considered to be supreme soul (Paramathman), Athmam (Purusha) or Brahma (ever expanding cosmic entity). As the first step of creation Avyaktha (undifferentiated, primordial entity) was manifested from the above said primary source.
According to Caraka-one of the greatest authorities of Ayurveda Life (Jiva) and other creations were evolved from Avyaktha. Akasha (space) was created from Avyaktha in the beginning. Vayu or air was created from Akasha……………………………………………
Akasha or space is not vacuum but filled with all kinds of electromagnetic waves – the fact which modern science also admits. Ayurveda considers Akash (and also vayu) as the source of Vata dosa, the most important constituent of ‘life’ (others being Pittha dosa and Kapha dosa which are material constituents of living body). Vata is considered to be the leading factor in the living body which is responsible for the movements inside the living body and of the motor organs. (Vata literally denotes movement)
Caraka and other Masters had described about five important sections of Vata, viz prana, apana, udana, samana and vyana. Susrutha – one among these Masters had described in details the functions of these sections.
1) Prana facilitate the functioning of heart (pulsation of heart), digestion and also absorption of nutrients from the food.
2) Apana is the energy responsible for ejaculation, urination etc
3) Udama is the driving force behind inhalation exhalation etc.
4) Samana facilitate division of rasa (the juice primarily absorbed from food and water after digestion) into blood, semen, bone marrow muscle, bone, skin etc.
5) Vyana is the factor behind all motor functions in and of the whole living body.
Bhela on e of the most ancient authorities on ayurveda considered the disturbance of vata (and also other two dosas) as the causative factor of mental diseases.
According to Ashtanga Hrudaya (a famous text on Ayurveda) mind and sensory organs also are activated by Vata energy
Caraka described that Athman (soul) receives Akasha (electro magnetic waves) as the first step of creation of life. We can safely assume that living bodies always absorb Electomagnetic waves reaching from sun, stars, cosmos and planets, (reflections), through the lower part of spinal cord or mooladhara (root chakra). From this part these energies radiate in to spinal cord, brain and other nervous systems facilitating the functions of mind, heart, sensory organs, motor organs and other subsystems.
According to Susrutha the sensation of pain is perceived with the help of this vital energy. He was also aware of the correlation among Vata, climatic conditions and circadian rhythm. Variations in the ability of living body to absorb these energies in different climates, and also the variations in the availability of these energies in the atmosphere at morning evening etc are the cause of this phenomenon.
In Ashtanga Hrudaya there are descriptions of state of mind being regulated by Vata. Wake fullness, dream, sleep, moods of mind etc are decided by the full or partial presence of these optical waves in the brain.
We can conclude that Vata or Pranas are the electromagnetic pulsations spread through out the nervous systems and its peripheries of living body, sustaining it and facilitating all of its functions.
